Exploring the Iberian peninsula across twenty five tracks

WE FORFEIT return to the interwaves, after the Summer break, with a very specific focus, the lads’ adopted home of Spain and the labels that hail from there. The Seat Ibiza is packed as Robbie and Chris explore the Iberian peninsula across twenty five tracks.

The northern coast is taken in. Galicia with Vagon Brei and Massage Brain Cult, from Lugo and A Coruña, as the lads make their way down the highways and byways towards the capital. Being Madrid based, the lads make a leisurely pitstop in their hometown with a wide selection coming from Frigio and Femur while sampling the likes of Negocius man and Arcanoid with pit-stops made at labels like Analogical Force Noise, Barro, Caustica Waveform, Eleve and Noise to Meet You. The rented motor is put through its paces, heading northwest for Cataluña to take in a tour of Camp Nou as well as visiting Aspecto Humano, Hooded, Polybius Trax, Spaecial and Útil before hitting the coast with Oráculo.

Never ones to shy away from overly long car journeys in searing heat with no aircon, WE FORFEIT plunge toward the southern coast for a two track stay with Waste Editions in Almería. A two hour audio excursion across a country, taking in electro, house, techno, synth, wave and much much more. Un abrazo!

WE FORFEIT (Mix 26) :: Radio Relativa #9 — Interview with Cignol

Cignol has been on the WE FORFEIT radar, as well as many other folks, for quite some time now. The Ireland based artist has been consistently delivering superb music, from acid tinged techno, braindance infused electronica to sky gazing electro. Chris and Robbie managed to track Paul Cignol down for a chat.

Braindance infused electronica to sky gazing electro

The WE FORFEIT lads have their beady eyes on many things. Cinnamon rolls. Loose change. Decent priced white wine. Their ears are tuned to something altogether better.

Cignol has been on the WE FORFEIT radar, as well as many other folks, for quite some time now. WE FORFEIT (Mix 25) :: Radio Relativa #8 - Italo Disco Spezial

WE FORFEIT (Mix 25) :: Radio Relativa #8 - Italo Disco Spezial

In fairness, italo should not belong to such a list. True, this synth pop, born in Italy around 1980, has some chequered names under its banner. However, there is a rich seam of musical gold when it comes to spaghetti dance. Chris and Robbie (WE FORFEIT) have dug deep into their collections to bring a split session that takes up the story of this analogue pop phenomenon from the very beginnings to its modern day incarnation.

An analogue pop phenomenon to its modern day incarnation

WE FORFEIT is all about the guilty pleasures. Breakfast in bed. Cream in the cornflakes. Battered fried slice in with the coffee. When it comes to musical guilty pleasures, italo disco is pretty high up on the lads’ list.

In fairness, italo should not belong to such a list. True, this synth pop, born in Italy around 1980, has some chequered names under its banner. However, there is a rich seam of musical gold when it comes to spaghetti dance. Chris and Robbie have dug deep into their collections to bring a split session that takes up the story of this analogue pop phenomenon from the very beginnings to its modern day incarnation.

Robbie gets the disco ball spinning in 1980 with Number One Ensemble, bringing us right up to 2014 with Alden Tyrell, as A Visitor from Another Meaning, and Fred Ventura. In between we traverse this ridiculously catchy sound with offers from Den Harrow, Brand Image, Forbidden Fruit and the indominable M&G’s When I Let You Down amongst others.

A more modern vision of the style is also on display with three pieces from one of the progenitors of italo, Fred Ventura. Ventura was there at the birth of the sound and has been instrumental in the reshaping and reinterpretation of the style for a new generation. Robbie was lucky enough to interview Fred Ventura for Bordello A Parigi recently.

Chris takes over with an italo inspired forty minute mix with classics from the likes of Model 500 weaved with timeless gems from the unforgettable Kano and Lime. Edits come care of Madrid’s very own Frigio Records with one of the godfathers of Rimini revivalism featuring in the form of Flemming Dalum.

The Summer is here, let it in! WE FORFEIT.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 24) :: Radio Relativa #7

WE FORFEIT (Mix 24) :: Radio Relativa #7

Show number seven on Radio Relativa went out with hopes and wishes that all out there are doing well and are safe during this time. Seeing as we are all spending copious amounts of time in the house, there’s never been a better opportunity to go digging amongst the records. This is exactly what Robbie and Chris (aka WE FORFEIT) did for their selections.

Digging amongst the records

Show number seven on Radio Relativa went out with hopes and wishes that all out there are doing well and are safe during this time. Seeing as we are all spending copious amounts of time in the house, there’s never been a better opportunity to go digging amongst the records. This is exactly what Robbie and Chris did for their selections.

The metallic crunch and warming strings of an absolute solid gold electronica classic, Gescom’s “Keynell” gets the ball bearings rolling. L’usine’s silken computer compositions follow with Michael Fakesch stirring sweetened synthlines into a syrupy soup of smashed snares.

The superb John Beltran is up next with the beautifully crafted “Wet With Rain” before the spatial ambience of Scanner’s Eros is bitten by The Black Dog. Keeping in this mellow mood, we’re off to Chris’ homeland with Lord of the Isles, the Scot’s delicate ode to the north of Spain, “Galicia,” mixed with The Actor’s Pedantry from the always amazing Ampoule, from Glasgow, before City Centre Office’s Boy Robot.

Robbie goes a bit off-piste with some afro-cosmic shenanigans and new-wave rave from Dj Steffan Egger and Dutch Dream Girls with Chris then taking the helm. Darker tones loom with selections from Shitcluster, Savage Grounds and Torrent (another nod to Chris’ town.)

Chris delves into his collection, digging out some gems from his adopted homeland of Spain. Labels like Clasicos Del Ruido feature alongside some greats of Iberian electronics in the form of Aviador Dro. That post-punk wave line is further explored with glowering, growling bangers from Beau Wanzer, Smersh and Bunker Records’ Pantser Fabriek.

To end, with the sun now beginning to shine here in Madrid and the news beginning to slowly improve, a bright and brilliant italo number from Stage; perhaps an indication of more italo to come next month? Who knows? WE FORFEIT do.

In these difficult times, WE FORFEIT wish you well and your loved ones well. If you like any of the music in particular in this month’s show, please do check out the artists and labels involved. Music is a hard number at the best of times, during this period any support for the creators will be much appreciated.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 22) on Radio Relativa :: Show #6

In this edition you’ll find old Rephlex gems, a favourite here at WE FORFEIT, freshly pressed electro slammers, introspective electronics, acid burners, new wave behemoths and even a bit of Bollywood doused EBM.

Staying positive and mentally active
What a difference a month can make. When this session for Radio Relativa was recorded, late February 2020, the world was a very different place. COVID-19 was of course known, yet its potential was not.
Since then this virus has turned the world economy upside down, stretched health care services to their limits and stolen loved ones from their family. None of this was imaginable when we recorded this show and now it all but too real.
As we all know, in these trying times it is important to stay positive and more important to stay mentally active. In this edition you’ll find old Rephlex gems, a favourite here at WE FORFEIT, freshly pressed electro slammers, introspective electronics, acid burners, new wave behemoths and even a bit of Bollywood doused EBM.
