WE FORFEIT :: Radio Relativa #17 LIVE @ Femur & Friends w/ Arch & Juanpablo (Frigio)

WE FORFEIT :: Radio Relativa #17 LIVE @ Femur & Friends w/ Arch & Juanpablo (Frigio)

With their first gig since January 2020, WE FORFEIT were delighted and more than ready when asked to share the hallowed Specka stage (with a brand new Funktion 1 sound system) with Arch and Juanpablo.

There are few places in Europe like Specka

There are few places in Europe like Specka. Buried amongst the office blocks and chain stores of the Spanish capital, this plucky venue has been a haven for electronic music since it first opened its doors more than thirty years ago. Some great nights have been had there, some late nights have been had in there. And the best of those nights? Undoubtedly the Femur parties.

For more than half a decade, Aitor Arch, DJ Arch, founder of the club-night and label, Femur, organized some of the best monthly music to be heard in Europe. The list of artists is as long as your arm, but to give a sample: Alden Tyrell, Beau Wanzer, Das Ding, Frak, Hyboid, Iron Blu, Kid Machine, Rude 66, Visonia, Solvent and many many more. With their first gig since January 2020, WE FORFEIT were delighted and more than ready when asked to share the hallowed Specka stage (with a brand new Funktion 1 sound system) with Arch and Juanpablo.

Seeing as we only have a two-hour slot on Radio Relativa, the seven plus hour session has been cut down to two of pure gold. Our host, Arch, dishes up some obscure gems in our first thirty minutes, before Chris, of WE FORFEIT fame, arrives for his thirty-minute segment of electronic goodness. Robbie is next with a mix of artists who have shared the Specka stage at Femur, all apart from Skanfrom who open his section, with Frigio’s very own Juanpablo ending with an unforgettable mix (like the one he did for us at Igloo some years back).

WE FORFEIT is sixteen, on Radio Relativa

After skulling flagons down the park and staying up ’till eleven, the lads got back to the records. A rake of favs found their way onto this month’s encounter. Smooth starry techno from Finnish wizard Aleksi Perälä, Spanish industrialism care of Esplendor Geométrico, raw electro from Ultradyne and Sonar Base of the mighty U-Trax alongside a good a sprinkling of cheer. Inspirational labels like Mothball, Forbidden Planet and the ever influential Bordello A Parigi and Rephlex take pride of place in this two hour melange.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 30) :: Radio Relativa #15 febrero – ¡El ACid!

WE FORFEIT (Mix 30) :: Radio Relativa #15 febrero – ¡El ACid!

¡Let’s have some El AÇID!

Thirty-nine years ago, the Roland Corporation had an idea. What if you replaced your bassist with a machine? Short Circuit 2? No. The result, the TB-303. Fix it up with your TR-606 drum machine and you could be your very own band! Who needs others to sooth the loneliness, eh Roland’s little silver machine was a failure. What came out of it didn’t sound like the smooth strumming of a bass guitar, it sounded like liquid tin poured across a xylophone. From such failings came something else, a movement and sound that might be tipping forty but is still full of vitality and verve: acid.

The history of the TB-303 is well known and here at WE FORFEIT we’ve tried to tell it in records. From the first acid house records of Chicago and, perhaps, the first use of a TB-303 on an album to modern day mutations, the lads are tripping down a squelchy lane. Brutality and brilliance abound as the molten messiness of the acid box is put through its paces, from expert knob twiddlers like AFX and Mike Dred to modern day noodlers like Kettel and EOD.

Chris gives us a full hour of acid assortments and sour selections that will leave teeth rattling and neighbors twitching curtains.

¡Let’s have some El AÇID!

Influences and inspirations is the focus with vinyl favorites

The New Year has been rung in at WE FORFEIT HQ, although it was a far-cry from the usual affair. With Chris locked-down in Valencia and Robbie snowed-in in Madrid, it was a truly socially distanced shindig. Such a time has given the lads time to reflect and get stuck into the record shelves. For this latest episode, the first of 2021, influences and inspirations is the focus with vinyl favorites from far and wide brought together to down a glass of Cava and belt out a few choice numbers.

Chris delves deep into the electro pioneer that was, is, and always will be, Cutting Records before Robbie introduces a techno favourite in the form of A13. We’re then led into the audio treats of Njimegen with selections from Deep Sound Channel and Shipwrec, including artists like 214, Luxus Varta and The Exaltics.

Chris visits the weird and wonderful world of Sex Tags Mania, DJ Soto Fett’s label with its warren of sub-divisions and subterranean platforms as well as a quick visit to Miami’s Isophlux. The journey continues with a bit of misty-eyed nostalgia as Robbie reminisces about his time in Glasgow with a selection of Tabernacle tracks, four tracks that focus on live-acts seen play in Scotland and here in Madrid.

We end with a couple of general favs, Chris’ grá for Gesloten Cirkel and Robbie’s own for AFX. Last show of that season but more to come! ¡Feliz año a todos y hasta la próxima!

WE FORFEIT (Mix 29) :: Radio Relativa #12 — Eoism & Robyrt Hecht

Sit back, grab a beer and enjoy more than two hours of music taking in synth, techno and serious dose of electro from Eoism of Pulse Drift and Robyrt Hecht of Clear Memory and YUYAY.

Two hours of music—taking in synth, techno and a serious dose of electro

Lockdown is the word of the year. Inspiring stuff. The universal touch of COVID has been incredible, as have the restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the virus. Cities have closed, opened and closed again. Constraints may have been applied, but on creativity they most certainly have not; not in Leipzig and certainly not for Eoism (Pulse Drift) and Robyrt Hecht (Clear Memory/YUYAY.)

The East German city has a chequered history when it comes to restrictions, some of the first protests against the repression of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) sprung up on its streets leading to a movement that toppled the Berlin wall. A sense of community runs through those very same streets today, a community that is plain to hear in the growth electronic music, with a raft of artists and labels, blooming through the cobblestones.

WE FORFEIT have had an ear on Leipzig for many years now, imprints like BlackRed, Lunatic and Rat Life having pride of place on the record shelves. Leipzig is given the full spotlight in this latest episode, with an interview with two musicians and two label founders who call his fascinating town their home.

Sit back, grab a beer and enjoy more than two hours of music—taking in synth, techno and a serious dose of electro from Eoism of Pulse Drift and Robyrt Hecht of Clear Memory and YUYAY.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 28) :: Radio Relativa #11

WE FORFEIT (Mix 28) :: Radio Relativa #11

After a veritable banquet of wall to wall specials, WE FORFEIT are returning to their roots of pulling out records and seeing what happens.

Forgotten gems of house, synth wave and more

The Summer of 2020 might not have been a great time for travelling, but it was fairly decent when it comes to stocking the control station with new records. For this latest edition, as the warmth subsides to the welcome cool of Winter, Robbie delves into some of the new deliveries, from golden italo to modern day synth sunbeams.

Flying solo for this one—Chris has recently moved to Valencia and should be back on the airwaves soon—Robbie steers, while the cat co-pilots, a course through recent releases by Blanco Y Negro, Bordello A Parigi, Gated Recordings, Ice Machine and Schrodinger’s Box. With holidays meaning stay home, an attempt was made to bring order to WE FORFEIT central during the long hot Summer days of Madrid. Sleeves were rolled up and (record) sleeves rearranged as Robbie went elbow deep into the records to try and organise ’em. Forgotten gems of house, synth wave and more were rediscovered and revived for October’s show including pieces from A Shortwave Mystery, Oppenheimer Analysis and Vangelis.

The world is toured without ever leaving the sitting room in this episode. Tourist Kid from Australia, Cute Heals from Colombia, Dead Husband from the US and more. Our advice, get the headphones on, sit back, relax and let WE FORFEIT take you on that journey you thought you’d missed.
