WE FORFEIT (Mix 18) on Radio Relativa :: Show #3 Interview with Hyboid (Astro Chicken)

WE FORFEIT know how to do Christmas. Long silences with loved ones, gritted teeth and processed ham. In this tradition, and that of making some mixes to ease the season, the lads are back at the stocking filling coalface to bring listeners messages of love and music. Through fictitious serendipity, a hackneyed flair for rhyming couplets and a fair bit of organisation, Robbie and Chris have a very special guest for their third show on Madrid’s Radio RelativaAstro Chicken’s Hyboid. Expect two hours of hard hitting questions, insight into Hyboid’s influences and inspirations, his creative process, unheard music, guilty pleasures and the answers to the issues of our time.
A chill on a…
Dark December night, a cold wind whips the city,
The pavements soaked, roads wet, dirty and gritty.
Winter claws a lone passenger, a passenger who hurtles through the rain,
A passenger who feels no misery, a passenger who feels no pain.
Disembarking, the collar is given a flick,
Chris’ head is down, his step is quick.
This Christmas weather bites to the bone
And our intrepid traveller is not set for home.
He’s off recording a two hour set,
One filled with electronic music and banter I’ll bet.
The streets are dark and the headphones are in,
Chris’ attention is grabbed, “Could that lad be my twin?”
Thud. Confusion. A bump between two.
“Pardon Me”, “Aye, wait, Hyboid, is that you?
The head of Astro Chicken? In our neighbourhood?”
“Doing some sightseeing, but a warm house would be good.”
“Well you’re in luck, my mate lives ‘round here,
We’re doing a radio show, would ya pull up a chair?”
“Questions and music, sound good to me!”
“Synth Pop. Electro. And a decent cup of tea!”
Warm sounds fill Robbie’s house, a buzzer cuts,
“Who’s tha? Yeah, come on up, no ifs or buts!”
“Brutal night, who’s that you’re playing?”
“Some Hyboid tracks, for an interview I’d be praying!”
“Well let me tell ya, those prayers have been answered,
You’re not gonna guess who I just encountered!”
O Saints be praised, O Heaven. O Joy,
It was like the WE FORFEIT lads were again but a boy.
With Hyboid they sat and warmly nattered,
Music, a snifter of port, nothing in the world mattered,
Questions, answers and a tasty cheeseboard
Christmas merriment and laughter to the sound of an electronic music record.
A glut of audio presents left under the polythene tree,
Festive fun and musical frolics from this happy three.
Thanks Hyboid!
Happy Christmas everyone! – WE FO FO FO FORFEIT

WE FORFEIT (Mix 17) on Radio Relativa :: Show #2

WE FORFEIT (Mix 17) on Radio Relativa :: Show #2

WE FORFEIT return to the airwaves of Spain and the inter-waves of the world with the second instalment of their eponymous show on Madrid’s Radio Relativa. Starting as they mean to go on, to paraphrase Aphex Twin, the lads continue down a line of electronic music exploration and inquiry with tracks taken from far and wide for this latest two hour session.
A selection from Britain’s Tagwell Woods, recently on Distant Worlds, is followed by whimsical banter and cosmic disco care of Xenon before delving into the darkness with Dramatis Personae. Following this heartening introduction comes the heart of this month’s broadcast, a cold core of electro around which the lads select choice cuts from Central Processing Unit, Schrodinger’s Box and FTP to name but a few. To thaw those icey sounds, pockets of warmth can be found form Daniel Andréasson, Roger 23 and pure sunshine from Kano.
Oppenheimer Analysis and Hyboid close the set with two rounding renditions of incandescent synth pop. Next month one of these two artists will be interviewed by the WE FORFEIT men. Expect piercing musical journalism, hard hitting questions, juicy tidbits and much more with some personal selections from the lads and their very special guest.
Thanks, as ever, to Radio Relativa and Callum McCallum of Bishopbriggs who can look forward to drinking his Bru from a WE FORFEIT mug. Gracias a todos! Intro :: From the laps (Bitmapped)

WE FORFEIT (Mix 16) on Radio Relativa – Show #1

WE FORFEIT (Mix 16) on Radio Relativa – Show #1

Before Robbie and Chris started making their WE FORFEIT mixes the original idea had been a wee sort of radio show. Bitta chat. Bitta discussion. Bitta misty eyed reminiscing about the past and how things were in our day. Now that original idea is coming to fruition.
Once a month WE FORFEIT will have a two hour show on Madrid’s Radio Relativa, an independent digital radio station based in the Spanish capital. The lads will finally get to have that bitta chat and whatnot alongside music from all areas of electronic music.
For the first show the lads go through their record collections, picking out teenage favourites, pensive tech-poetry and modern day melters. The result? A rich soup of electro, italo, house, lotsa IDM, wave and techno bruisers garnished with pearls of wisdom, mispronounced words and difficult to make out accents. A meaty platter of dusty vinyl, gleaming wax and obscurities drizzled with anecdotes, reflections and tangential memories. A meringue filled with music, good humour, love, tears, bribes, cat hair and Aphex Twin.
Thanks to Radio Relativa for the opportunity and young Huw Stephens for his incisive and insightful question for Chris. Gracias a todos!

WE FORFEIT (Mix 15) :: Bunk3r @ Utopia — Madrid June 14, 2019

DL https://drive.google.com/open?id=1YuVmRiIg8co2Xo-q0DQCXnk7pOqQTAU5

There is nowhere Chris and Robbie would rather spend their Friday night than in an industrial estate, especially if that industrial estate is home to one best sound systems in the Spanish capital and WE FORFEIT have been invited to hammer out some tunes alongside some of Madrid’s finest. Amongst a line up including Juanpablo (Frigio), Ruben Montesco (Industrias Mekanikas), Fake Robotique, Mora and DJ Zabor, the “Ireland and Scotland” pairing served up near two hours of sweat inducing goodness.
Robbie was up first and reflected the grit of the industrial surroundings with the mechanical groan and grunt of DJ Spider & Phil Moffa before the gruesome grind and vicious slice of Chemotex. A brightening begins with the mysterious finale Wargames 12”, a brightening that is carried into two 90s EBM burners from Interactive and one of Jeff Mills’ first projects as Final Cut. Canada’s Psyche shift us into some angular wave with Justin Van Der Volgen arriving on the scene for a smoulder synth burner and Armando’s lost gem, “Don’t Take It”, adding some Chicago punch. Mick Wills, under his rarely used Kinky Lovers guise with Isabella Venis, reimagines the chilling Hollywood Seven by Alides Hidding as Manse waiting in the wings for some industrial wallop. Colder moods continue with Delta Funktionen before a thaw sets in with the analogue warmth of Dona. The mix ends with a simply superb yet sadly overlooked electro masterpiece, Redshift’s timeless and tense “Glide.”
Chris takes over with a straight for the cerebellum selection from Negocius Man, Franck Sarrio and Mr Batman from the excellent Lunar Orbit Program. Filleting those ruffled edges, Lena Wilikens dreamy remake of Lena Platonos’ “Lego” gives way to the rough and ragged edges of Sanisbar smashes before calm is restored by the pioneering Neil Landstrum. Chris toys with his tracks, meshing with harsher tones and smoother lines. “Signal 27” is a cold dipped dystopian Kraftwerk-like creation, Dawl and Sweet adopting sci-fi modulations against cold vocals. The frigid funk follows into Larionov & St Theodore’s ice clad concoction with temperatures rising for the lipstick stained disco romance of Machinegewehr entangling Nouvelle Phenomene. Chris spikes this love tale with the bloodshot banger that is “The Scene” by Im Keller with Tonnovelle trying to add a modicum of sanity to the proceedings to end.
A muchísimas gracias a toda la gente de Bunk3r y Utopia por la oportunidad. WE FORFEIT.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 14) :: DJ Insofar As He Didn’t Want To Be One

Here at We Forfeit we are always trying to source new and exciting mixing types to keep our stock as fresh as it can possibly be. Our latest plato principal comes from a little known Madrid based entity: DJ En La Medida En Que No Quería Ser Uno, which roughly translates into DJ Insofar As He/I Didn’t Want To Be One.
Born and raised in the Spanish capital, this new friend of WE FORFEIT serendipitously bumped into Robbie and Chris while the lads were out eating a plate of ham. Recognising Chris from his photo (see Chris here) the madrileño told us he was a listener and might have something from his own vinyl only mix archives for the gents.
This new member of the WE FORFEIT family offers up a scintillating selection that spans a spread of styles such as synth wave, gruelling acid, dark disco, mutant house and much more. Fingers crossed he’ll have more for us in the future if he can tear himself away from the record shops, the slot machines and the litre bottles of Mahou.
Sfire :: “2 (Timothy J Fairplay Remix)” ([Emotional] Especial, CockTail d’Amore Music)
Curses :: “The Deep End (2017 Redux)” (Safer At Night)
Kvaser :: “Botz Wana” (Tabernacle)
Pleasure Model :: “Drill Sergeant” (Dalmata Daniel)
Norwell :: “Outer Delta Dynamics” (Dalmata Daniel)
Neue Lärmklassiker :: “El Lugar” (Clasicos Del Ruido)
Chinaski :: “Unruhe” (OMNIDISC)
Electronic Badminton King ‎:: “Do You C?” (Scienceofuse)

WE(d) FORFEIT (Mix 13.1) :: The Entrance

Chris got the show on the road with a show-stopping selection. Slickly switching between brooding house to bright-eyed belters, the WE FORFEIT man delivers the goods and then some. Synth scented disco from Patrick Cowley, analogue beams from Infinity Night alongside a smattering of Crème Oganization classics.

WE(d) FORFEIT (Mix 13.2) :: The Newlyweds

Robbie and Katie stepped up next. After their speech (included by the way), Robbie’s a tad beer stained, the fresh faced couple went back to back for a mix of favourites. Emotional bangers from the suited and booted pair include a range from the likes of Marilyn on Dark Entries, John Carpenter, New Order with some soaring synth numbers care of Bordello A Parigi and Vivod. Was that Sabrina at the end?

WE(d) FORFEIT (Mix 13.3) Zorz :: The Cake Cut / Bouquet Throw

Zorz cut some heavy slabs of disco, synthwave and all manner of free-flowing funk as the newlyweds fought their way through pastry. Expect tripped out proto-house, red blooded electro and sky gazing synth wave. As the bouquet flew Zorz put the foot to the floor and drove home some body jerk bangers, including one from our friends at Frigio.

WE(d) FORFEIT (Mix 13.4) Dank Matter :: The Last Dance

The kilted-man killed it for the curtain fall. Pushing tracks, and hearts, well into the red, the Schrodinger’s Box boss created a sweatbox in the lush hills outside Madrid with a set of gold dust brilliance. Italo fuelled, disco injected, scratch scented extravaganza from Glasgow’s selector sensation (even a bit of Boards of Canada’s Hell Interface remake of Midas Touch in here!)

WE FORFEIT & Zorz (Mix 12):: Creatures Of The Night Vol 9. (05.03.2019 – Radio Relativa – Madrid)

Luck will have it that Zorz not only shared an astoundingly similar taste in music to Robbie and Chris, he also lived a stone’s throw away in Robbie’s barrio. Since then some cracking days, nights and mornings have been enjoyed together including a recent session for WE FORFEIT to try their luck on Zorz’s Creatures of the Night show hosted on Madrid’s very own.

The club can be a strange environment ::

The club can be a strange environment. One moment you are a coal mine with a mirrorball and strobe lights, the next it is the most inviting, friendly faces and comradery in every corner. It was during the latter that I met Zorz, DJ, member of Pi Electronics and all round music aficionado.

DJ Sneaker was playing here in Madrid and I bumped into lover of all things electronic and, as luck would have it, I had just done an interview with a very good friend of his, the boss of Pi Electronics.

Although we were all fairly bleary eyed after being out the night before at Ultradyne, we dusted ourselves down, ironed the shirts and made our way to the studio off Calle Atocha.

Thank you Zorz & Radio Relativa ::

The two hour set is opened by the host. Faced with a pair of turntables, CDJs and a rotary mixer, Zorz effortlessly makes his way through a spread of styles. Rich textured ambience, soulful techno, toughened EBM and otherworldly trips. Tracks come from far and wide including Crystal Maze on aDepth Audio, fellow countryman DimDj and the Mannequin mastermind Alessandro Adriani.

Robbie is up for the next forty five minutes. Homage is paid to many of the artists who have played in Madrid in the last two months (and there has been an incredible amount of quality on offer.) Ultradyne, Junq, Cignol, DMX Krew and Univac, all of whom graced the Spanish capital with sets between January and March are represented. Homegrown Iberian talent is well represented by Old Coroner (played at 45rpm to give it a bit of whack) on Waste Editions and Sweden’s Fishermen attacking their fellow countryman Celldöd on Madrid’s very own Femur. Darker moments come care of Tropical Goth’s Shredder while brighter spots from Bordello A Parigi’s always incandescent catalogue.

Chris closes the proceedings with a bubbling stew of darkened electronics, future-gazing funk and industrial ooze. New talent melts with dusty gems as record shelves are plundered for this cracking set. Grisly techno comes care of Rise Black before the uplifting Reflective Souls and moody tones of Farron on Forbidden Planet. Metal glints in the steely productions of Betek and Jensen Interceptor with angular softened by the legendary Bitstream and deep currents of Hodge on Berceuse Heroique. Chris closes with some red blooded bangers and late night warehouse classics.

Despite giving away a far bit in the above, we’ve decided not to provide a full tracklist (although we will on request.) ¡Enjoi!

Thanks again to Zorz and the guys at Radio Relativamuchísimas gracias!

WE FORFEIT (Mix 11) :: Something Approaching Happiness

DOWNLOAD LINK https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WHf3SuW2e8N1c64XjGu77d8XLUJ9B48r/view?usp=sharing

Although Robbie likes mixing records, he is not a fan of DJ culture. The hype around “selections” made by such and “gets up my goat” he says. How so-and-so managed to unearth some lost gem through hours of crate diggin’ never sat right.
Of course there is a satisfaction to hearing something unheard, of finding out about an unknown and the delight of discovering a new label or even genre. However, the almost elitist sense that we all have cavernous record stores within spitting distance of our homes and hours of your time can be dedicated to flipping through sagging sleeves and warped wax is fantasy world stuff. Obviously, it is important to support your local record shop, but it is just as important to support contemporary labels rather than gazing moony eyed at some disco records bordering on proto-house on Discogs.
The majority of the tracks in this mix were bought on sale, not all but the majority, and WE FORFEIT figured it would be nice to celebrate some modern music that for some reason or other slipped through the gaps and really shouldn’t have. Others are from labels Robbie has had the pleasure of working with, such as the always excellent Bordello A Parigi, Shipwrec, as well as something from one of Glasgow’s stars: Schrödinger’s Box.
The point? The past of electronic music is a wonderful thing and holds a wealth of possibilities, just like the present. To paraphrase Calvin and Hobbes, there’s treasure, and ironies, everywhere.

WE FORFEIT (Mix 10.1 & 10.2) :: Baroque Sounds Of The British Isles & Music and Chips Sesiónes

CHRIS with festive cheer

Chris is tremulous with festive cheer. Inspired by his recent jaunt to Berlin, where E.R.P. and Container were sampled at Pi Electronics and Mechatronica frequented, our resident Glaswegian serves up a collection of full boded, red blooded machine music. Names leaping from his merry mix include Artefakt, Plant43 and Spain’s own Univac. Chris has dug deep to unearth some past pearls on Djax-Up-Beats and U-trax as well as contemporary talent like Galaxian and Prostitutes. Expect BPM’s to boil over with this no-prisoners taken selection, ears will ring in the new year with the Baroque Sounds Of The British Isles.

Farron :: Cerrome (Forbidden Planet)
Analog Attack :: 303 + Composer (Djax-up-Beats)
Noord Halle :: 5r Jefre (Bakk)
The Burrell Connection :: Hyper_14.255 (Craigie Knowes)
The Advent :: Dorian Blue (Thema)
Woody McBride :: Huge (Bush)
Univac :: Unknown Radio (30D Records)
Artefakt :: Falling Into the Light (Delsin)
Plant43 :: Fluid Reasoning (Semantica)
214 :: Sidestepping (Harbour City Sorrow)
Gian :: Subdimensional (LACKREC)
Chaos :: Afrogermanic (Underground Resistance)
Bishop :: The Last Rung Of The Ladder (U-Trax)
Galaxian :: Days Of Rage (Shipwrec)
Prostitutes :: Call In from BroadWay (Diagonal)
Cane :: Reeze (Marguerita)

CHRIS & ROBBIE’s Madrid takeover

Robbie’s choices come from two sets that the WE FORFEIT men did here in Madrid in 2019. Each month Music and Chips takes over Ballesta club and opens its arms, and decks, to those with a bit of vinyl running in their veins. Attempting to follow a similarly banging vein to Chris, Robbie has chosen some big boned bruisers, dizzy eyed ravers and leather jacket stompers alongside synth pop dreamers and glow stick purveyors.
