Valencia is an epicenter of electronic music. Hypnotica Colectiva is one of the city’s hubs and has been a pivotal point in Spain for more than fifteen years. Located in the heart of Valencia, ran from record-store-come-club Killing Time, a label was spawned in 2016 with HC Records.

In spite of Valencia’s COVID restrictions (some of the strictest in Spain), Hypnotica Colectiva kept the “ruta de bacalao” spirit alive this summer with a four day birthday bash in August 2021. To celebrate sixteen years of fostering electronics across the Iberian peninsula, and beyond, Killing Time turned the amplifiers back on and welcomed folk to return. WE FORFEIT were delighted to be part of this return to music. Over four and a half hours, the lads went through two fat bags of records. Acid. EBM. Electro. House. Italo. Techno. Wave. The electronic gauntlet was well and truly ran.

The essence of that mix has been simmered down to two hours. Expect tracks from the likes of Aspecto Humano, Bordello A Parigi, Femur, Frigio, Emotional Response, Hivern Discs, Waste Editions, Where We Met, Unusual Systems and, of course, HC Records.

WE FORFEIT Presents... 

A night of debauchery and devilment with the first ever WE FORFEIT night in Killing Time.

To inaugurate this new venture, the lads have enlisted the services of a cracking musician and electronic innovator; Neud Photo.

An artist steeped in electro, raised on new beat, soaked in acid, led the wrong way by techno and addicted to italo; Neud Photo is an artist guaranteed to bring the goods. Bordello A Parigi. Frigio Records. Rat Life. Just some of the labels that have featured his intoxicatingly unique sound. And we’ve got him for one of his first live sets in Spain. Unmissable.  

WE FORFEIT will be sharing the cabin with a cracking collection of Djs. An exciting upcoming selector, Nahuel is primed for some choice cuts. 
Orco, of Fill-Lex Records fame, will be on hand to deliver a cold blend of electro, techno and wave.

David Verdeguer, the man behind HC Records and Killing Time, will take to the cabin with a guarantee of pure quality.

A Spanish influence

This was recorded just before we headed to play at the Hypnotica Colectiva XVI Anniversary in Valencia, so we decided to start things out this month with some of HC’s finest and a cracking track by Colombia’s Filmmaker. A Spanish influence runs through our selections with month with Corp, Dip Shim, Mynationshit and Sed Blava as well as labels like Masa Series and Noise to Meet You; we’ve even managed some Spanish italo care of Tolerance.

Chris digs deep into the crates, resurfacing with electrofunk from Newcleus and wave floor-filler Night Moves. The machines are also centre stage with Roger Van Lunteren hitting some heavy numbers on Something Happening, Somewhere and 030303. Techno gems come care of Luke Slater and PA Presents on U-Trax with some soothing electronics, drawing Summer to a close, by, Konduka and Finnnish masters Pan Sonic.

WE FORFEIT have tried our best to put some shows together, collating and colliding genres from far and wide for our monthly show on Radio Relativa. We’ve managed to get some mixes done and have more lined up.

A great audio memory for a wonderful night of music

Despite the hardships on the ever enduring COVID, there have been some highlights; beacons piercing the perennial fog that has dominated the last twenty plus months. There have been some great releases, cracking music that has broadened horizons and raised spirits. WE FORFEIT have tried our best to put some shows together, collating and colliding genres from far and wide for our monthly show on Radio Relativa. We’ve managed to get some mixes done and have more lined up.

Some of our proudest moments have come playing out, the ability to get back into a club and bang out some bangers was a real treat. We were lucky enough to have played with Aitor Arch and Juanpablo at Femur & Friends in Specka (thanks again to all concerned) and in April WE FORFEIT were back in Specka with Nöle (Barro founder and Stardust resident) once again in the hallowed ground of Specka.

For this last show of the season, we’ve put together some of favorite segments of the live recording from that night we had at Bizarro.

First up is Robbie. The set starts out with some brooding electronics, care of EMAK, Les Invalides and Nine Circles, before balance is found via labels like Anna Logue, Bordello A Parigi, Domestica and La Forme Lente. Artists that feature include the likes of Ian Martin, Intergalactic Gary and Heinrich Dressel.

Chris takes over the helm with Metropolis’ moody “Tonight” taken from Pinkman’s Broken Dreams series. From there the listener is taken on an emotional tilt-a-whirl through industrial menace, new beat hope and Neon Judgement sternness.

Nöle, our host at Bizarro, is our captain to the close. The Barro boss guides you through a mix of 80s leaning post-punk tearjerkers, oblong pop and trench-coat love affairs. Some proper gems in this one; what is the last one on here?

A generous mélange of ripe releases

For this one, Robbie has been diggin’ into some past favorites. Gems, care of Martin Haringer of Das M and Gimmik fame alongside the cracking Toytronic, are unearthed with Gimmik now back releasing on n5MD/Hidden Reality with a reissue of his Load Error EP which came on on Lapsus not too long ago.

We don’t wander too far down memory lane—a generous mélange of ripe releases is on offer to feast the ears. Schrödinger’s Box is weighed down with new music, Dmitry Distant & Norwell as well as Rapha (707) of Chateau Royal getting some well-deserved airtime. Sound Synthesis once again delivers the goods, this time for Distant Worlds with a track taken from Keith Farugia’s new 12”.

This month’s show is brimming with techno delights and more new music. Nuron being remixed by Kirk Degiorgio, Miles Atmospheric on Firescope, the depths of Artefakt. The lads have also plundered the collection for some lesser known machine music, Pigaja, Mod21 and Unam Zeitnab exploring the boundaries between dub techno and industrial.

Tracks that didn’t make it into WE FORFEIT’s sets from Bizarro are at the core of this month’s show. Horrorshow wave and brooding synth are Robbie’s out-takes with Chris upping the bpm with the fire and brimstone of Absolute Body Control, Jensen Interceptor and Challenger of the Unknown.

Two 7”s finish with more synth wave on offer from the Aesthetic, such a cracker, with the racing Neolicht from Relativ Kälte ending. Second last one of this season. Enjoy. ¡Besos a la distancia requerida.

There are few places in Europe like Specka

There are few places in Europe like Specka. Buried amongst the office blocks and chain stores of the Spanish capital, this plucky venue has been a haven for electronic music since it first opened its doors more than thirty years ago. Some great nights have been had there, some late nights have been had in there. And the best of those nights? Undoubtedly the Femur parties.

For more than half a decade, Aitor Arch, DJ Arch, founder of the club-night and label, Femur, organized some of the best monthly music to be heard in Europe. The list of artists is as long as your arm, but to give a sample: Alden Tyrell, Beau Wanzer, Das Ding, Frak, Hyboid, Iron Blu, Kid Machine, Rude 66, Visonia, Solvent and many many more. With their first gig since January 2020, WE FORFEIT were delighted and more than ready when asked to share the hallowed Specka stage (with a brand new Funktion 1 sound system) with Arch and Juanpablo.

Seeing as we only have a two-hour slot on Radio Relativa, the seven plus hour session has been cut down to two of pure gold. Our host, Arch, dishes up some obscure gems in our first thirty minutes, before Chris, of WE FORFEIT fame, arrives for his thirty-minute segment of electronic goodness. Robbie is next with a mix of artists who have shared the Specka stage at Femur, all apart from Skanfrom who open his section, with Frigio’s very own Juanpablo ending with an unforgettable mix (like the one he did for us at Igloo some years back).
